Google has unveiled a
new app 'Bolo' that aims to help primary school students learn to read in Hindi
and English.
Bolo features an animated character 'Diya', that encourages
kids to read stories aloud and helps if the kid is unable to pronounce a word. The
app was earlier piloted in about two hundred villages in state.
The app presently offers fifty Hindi and forty English
stories from Storyweaver, the open source digital platform for
multilingual children's stories from
Bengaluru-based organisation Pratham Books. Google said it'll soon expand the
catalogue with more stories from totally different partners.
"We have designed the app to work offline, therefore
users need to just download the under 50MB app once and then they need access
to close to a hundred stories in Hindi and English that the kids will scan
aloud and improve their reading skills," said Google India Product Manager
Nitin Kashyap. Over the next 6 months, Google are working closely with four of
its non-profit-making partners - Pratham Education Foundation, space to scan,
Saajha and Kaivalya Education Foundation (a Piramal Initiative) to require the
app to a lot of kids and any expand its efforts across the country.
The android app,
that is being launched in India initial, is high-powered by Google's speech
recognition and text-to-speech technology. it's offered as a free transfer on
Google Play Store for all smartphones running android 4.4 or later. the
corporate is also looking at shortly expanding the app to different indic
languages like Bengali. To ensure privacy of the kid, all personal data forever
stays on device. The users are also not asked for details like email ID and
gender for work into the app, Google said in a very statement.
